Aer Lingus cabin crew have voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action. 91% of the workers represented by the trade union IMPACT have backed the move.

The dispute centres on rosters and the closure of the cabin crew base at Shannon Airport.

Aer Lingus previously announced in October that it would no longer base cabin crew at Shannon from March next year. The move will see 87 job losses.

The decision is the result of a labour dispute over staffing arrangements for new Aer Lingus transatlantic services that are set to begin in 2014 and will be using a smaller Boeing 757 aircraft.

Aer Lingus is leasing Boeing aircraft from Air Contractors and intended to use its own cabin crew on the aircraft.

The extent and type of industrial action is not likely to be confirmed today.
