On this week’s So You Think You’re an Adult, one woman’s heart is split between her current boyfriend and a past flame. 

“I’ve been going out with my current partner for 3 years, he’s amazing and I really enjoy his company,” she told Moncrieff. 

“However, before I met him I dated a man on and off in work for a few years. 

“I fell very hard for him at the time, and when we broke up, because he moved away, I was distraught.

“However, through a weird and random set of circumstances he is now back in my life - and with his return came my feelings.” 

She said she still loves her boyfriend and does not plan on cheating, but she can’t help her feelings for an old flame coming back. 

“Various websites on Google tell my I’m in denial,” she said. 

'Why do you love him?'

Broadcaster Declan Buckley said the “short answer” is you can definitely be in love with two people at once – but it’s not a yes or no question. 

“This question is more about why you love somebody,” he said. 

“She lost that love and it's all very sad and now there’s a chance to ‘get him back’, which is kind of tapping into something that's not really about the day-to-day kind of boring stuff about being genuinely in love. 

“The real issue is whether or not you recognise what it is that's attracting you to the other person, and whether or not those qualities can be found within the person that you've already chosen. 

“Otherwise, maybe you go polyamorous in the future.” 

'Make a decision'

Writer Barbara Scully might be attracted to the “excitement” the return of her past lover. 

“I think obviously she didn't have closure from what it sounds like because he moved away,” she said. 

“They're the things that are kind of driving her – there isn’t a question. 

“You can be in love with two people, but can you act on that? I don’t think so. 

“She has to make a decision and live with that.” 

One texter said the question immediately reminded them of Carrie, Mr Big and Aidan from Sex and the City.
