The iconic 99 ice cream is a familiar sight on seafronts across Ireland every summer - but a "huge shortage" of a key ingredient could threaten the popular snack this year.
Suppliers say stock issues with Cadbury Flake - the crumbly chocolate bar that makes a 99 more than just a regular cone - could see shops and ice cream parlours run out as the summer progresses.
A spokesperson from Cadbury owner Mondalez confirmed to The Irish Times there has been an "increase in demand" for the bar, but assured people Flakes are still available to order.
However, some stores have stocked up early just in case, in particular as we head into a summer that's set to be dominated by outdoor activity and socialising.
Joe Quinn, owner of Bon Bon in Salthill in Galway, spoke to Moncrieff about the flaky supplies of the flaky snack.
He explained: “About four to five weeks ago, the rep I buy my ice cream mix off said there’s going to be a huge shortage [of Flakes] this year.
“I thought it was just a joke or whatever. But we got a good stock in, and [the rep] maintains they’re unavailable anywhere - even in Europe.
“They can’t make them fast enough, I think. They used to make them in Dublin, then they went to England, and now they’re made in Egypt.”
Joe assured locals and visitors Bon Bon is prepared, and they hope to have enough Flakes to meet the inevitable summer demand for 99s.
