386 primary and secondary schools, including 58 across Dublin, are getting government funding to make improvements.

Toilets and roofs will be repaired and upgraded under the summer work scheme.

A total of €35 million is being provided nationally on top of €36 million already announced for electrical and mechanical works.

Education Minister Ruairi Quinn says "the great thing about it is that a lot of the preliminary work has been done by the schools - they know what they want and they've identified who's going to do the work for them".
