A man (28) has been found guilty of murdering a man, whose body was found in the refuse chute of a Cork city apartment complex two years ago.

Just before convicting David O'Loughlin, the jury went to the scene to examine the chute at Garden City Apartments, North Main Street.

After four hours and 27 minutes, the jury found O'Loughlin guilty of murdering Liam Manley (59) in May 2013.

The foreman told Mr Justice Paul Carney that the verdict was agreed by all 12 of the jurors, who had earlier this morning gone to the scene to examine the upper section of the refuse shoot.

O'Loughlin, who has 49 previous convictions - including jail sentences for serious assaults - showed no reaction in court when the verdict was read out.

In a victim impact statement on behalf of the family, Liam Manley's sister Kay Murphy said that he did not deserve to die in such horrific and frightening circumstances - and that his final thoughts, afraid and alone in the rubbish, will haunt them forever.

Speaking outside the court, Liam Manley's other sister Mary Lynch told Cork's 96FM that the trial took its toll on the family.

O'Loughlin was given the mandatory sentence of life in prison.

Ralph Riegel of the Irish Independent gave more details on the case to Newstalk Lunchtime.
