A woman who assaulted a man with an umbrella while drunk on a “frightening mixture” of alcohol has been given an 18 month suspended sentence.
Nina Lee (19) from Hardwick Street, Dublin pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assault causing harm on Lord Edward Street on August 2 2013.
Garda Paraic Keogh said Lee was too drunk to give a statement. He waited five hours to interview her after having her medically examined.
Lee had no recollection of the event and was shocked when she identified herself on CCTV attacking the man. She said she had been drinking “vodka, wine, Hennessey, everything.”
Pieter Le Vert BL, defending, described it as a “frightening mixture” and said that Lee didn’t even know what the Garda was talking about when he mentioned the attack with an umbrella.
Lee said she wouldn’t do something like that when asked if she had attacked the man and couldn’t believe it when she saw herself striking the man on CCTV. She agreed that it was a “cowardly and violent” attack.
The victim was walking home after a night out when he was attacked by Lee, who was with a group of young women.
Lee was the only one of the group who took part in that attack but another man, who is facing trial, ran across the road and started punching the man as well. He then pushed the man’s head against a street bollard, knocking him out.
The victim was treated in St James Hospital and said that he rarely goes into the city centre since the incident.
Judge Martin Nolan said it was an “unprovoked and rather nasty assault.” He suspended the sentence due to it being a first offence and the remorse shown.
He said he thought about ordering her to pay money to the victim but that it was not appropriate as Lee is caring for her sick grandmother.
