A new report from UNICEF states that 120 million girls, or slightly over one in ten girls around the world has been sexually abused.

Drawing on data from 190 countries, the UN children's agency also says that 95 thousand children and teens were murdered in 2012; most of them in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The report says while violence rises during war overall, war accounts for just a small share of attacks on children.

The study also revealed that about six out of 10 children aged between two and 14 were subjected to physical punishment from their carers on a regular basis.

One fifth of homicide victims globally are children and adolescents under the age of 20, resulting in about 95,000 deaths in 2012.

“These are uncomfortable facts — no government or parent will want to see them,” said UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake. “But unless we confront the reality each infuriating statistic represents — the life of a child whose right to a safe, protected childhood has been violated — we will never change the mind-set that violence against children is normal and permissible.  It is neither. “
