Dublin

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY is the new free exhibition at Science Gallery at Trinity College Dublin (running from now until February 4th 2018) and explores why the disastrous can be devilishly entertaining, and whether there’s any truth to these dismal predictions.
Doomers, designers and doctors lay out the top threats to our world and how likely they are to happen, with highlights including A manual for civilisation, a curated library of books to restart humanity from scratch, and The Antibiotic Resistance Quilt, which is dyed with pathogenic bacteria and shows how our drugs are no longer working.
The Dublin Flea Christmas Market
Dublin’s biggest Christmas market returns to The Point Square this weekend with over 135 stalls from local and international traders.
Offering the alternative to Christmas on the high street - there will be a considered and curated collection of up-and- coming Irish contemporary design, art, hand-made craft and delectable foods alongside The Dublin Flea Market’s much loved mix of antiques, vintage and retro collectibles. In the spacious environs of the Point Square, the market is completely covered in case of bad weather.
Joining them will be Flea favourites Kirk Modern, Dando Design, Grand Grand and Brookwood
Pottery. Sceal Bakery, Natasha’s Living Foods, Corleggy Cheese and The Dublin Honey Project who, are just some of the food producers who will be on hand offering the perfect stocking fillers and gifts.
An Irish Carol, Christmas Trees, and a Rose
Taking place in Dublin’s medieval gem Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday evening, this very special seasonal concert celebrates carols old and new.
In a unique Christmas programme, the wonderful Christmas Story by one of Germany’s finest 20th-century composers, Hugo Distler, is told in chant-like solos with choral interventions, threaded through with a series of choral variations on the lovely Christmas hymn ‘Es ist ein Ros entsprungen‘.
This work will be joined by a beautiful grouping of carols by contemporary Irish composers; Rhona Clarke, Gerald Barry, Frank Corcoran, Eoghan Desmond and Eric Sweeney.
Chamber Choir Ireland’s annual Christmas performance is a festive highlight for many - tickets for this can’t-be-beaten festive evening are available from €15.
BANG BANG at Bewley's Café Theatre
A beautiful one-man show by Dermot Bolger, this hilarious yet poignant new play takes us inside the mind of one of Dublin's best loved real-life eccentrics of yesteryear: an irrepressible dreamer who magically transformed Dublin into the Wild West for generations of young Dubliners who encountered him every day”‹.
Through Bang Bang’s eyes we get to see an alternative social history of Dublin that has much to say to the present day, especially at Christmas time, when our humanity and shared experience is most dear.
BANG BANG takes place in Bewley's Café Theatre at Powerscourt on Saturday at 1pm, and you can also grab lunch at the venue for a mere €4.
Galway
B D G R L at Artist Run Gallery
B D G R L (Bad Girl) is a new exhibition curated by 126 Gallery Interns, Chloe Austin, Sarah Keenan and Saffron Lily.
These works were created in response to our open call that focused on navigating a discussion on society’s expectation of women, how younger generations of women are pressured to portray themselves as overly sexualised as a way to claim cultural power and the origins of the phrase ‘Bad Girl’.
This inaugural exhibition features individual works from artists Emily Lohan, Eden Mitsenmacher, Katie O’Grady and Samir Rana.
Kilkenny
Kilkenny’s Christmas festival runs all through December and sees the Parade Plaza brought to life with yuletide cheer and an exciting programme of festive events.
View the city streets & lighting from a giant Ferris wheel, take a canter on the antique carousel, soak up scents of artisan food at the bespoke Christmas Market and cast away shopping stresses with a wander through countless craft and gift ideas made by local artists.
The Parade will also play host to lots of events throughout the festival, with highlights including The Deise medieval street actors and a busking competition that will keep the parade and medieval mile alive with music.
On Sunday afternoon a Unity Dinner will take place at St. Kieran’s College, where persons in direct provision, settled communities and natives of Kilkenny are invited to share a celebration of food, dancing and fun.

What’s The Story? History, Memory, and Myth in an Age of Alternative Facts
In a post-truth age characterised by ‘alternative facts’ and ‘fake news’, it’s often difficult to discern what is truly happening. This intriguing exhibition in Cork City’s Crawford Art Gallery takes inspiration from the ‘fake news’, where separating truth from untruth has now become central to contemporary life.
Drawing on the work of some of Ireland’s finest artists, this exhibition enables you to consider reality and invention in parallel, and invites you to question accepted truths and the multiple versions of history that are represented in art.
Crawford Art Gallery encourages visitors to explore these history paintings and allegories, landscapes and scenes of everyday life to unpick the mythmaking, to challenge the shaping of history and to discover what’s the story.
