The final episode of the current X-Files revival is airing in the US tonight, but it's already been announced that there are more Mulder and Scully adventures on the way - but maybe not the ones fans were expecting.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the two detectives will feature in a pair of new young adult novels, featuring the iconic characters as teenagers.

Agent of Chaos and Devil’s Advocate will each focus on one of the two future special FBI investigators in 1979 - the former focusing on a young Fox Mulder, the latter on a 15-year-old Dana Scully.

Mulder's book will be written by Kami Garcia, and Scully's by Jonathan Maberry. Both X-Files Origins novels are due to be published in January 2017.

Erin Stein of publisher Imprint said, “as a die-hard fan of the show, the opportunity to work with incredible authors on original stories about these characters is a dream come true for me. Why did Mulder become a believer? Why did Scully become a skeptic? We get to tell those stories".

If they're not exactly the sort of further X-Files adventures you'd like to see, the good news is that the producers and the stars of the show have refused to rule out more episodes following the recent mini-series.

Answering whether he'd be willing to make more, David Duchovny, who plays Mulder, told Ellen DeGeneres that “I would love to... I think we all would".
