Taoiseach Enda Kenny says it is unlikely he will have enough votes to be re-elected as Taoiseach this Thursday.

It comes as various negotiations and discussions take place on the formation of a new government.

Speaking in Brussels, the Fine Gael leader says he does not think any candidate will have the necessary support to be elected as Taoiseach at the first meeting of the 32nd Dáil.

While the Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald says Mr Kenny has the full support of Fine Gael.

Ms Fitzgerald said that they would not go into negotiations to form a government undermining their leader.

She said that Fine Gael has a responsibility as the largest party to try to form a stable government.

Ms Fitzgerald has been tipped as a candidate to replace Mr Kenny, but says right now they are supporting their leader.

And the Social Democrats have called for government formation and Dáil reform to run simultaneously.

Party co-founder Roisín Shortall says the negotiations are the perfect opportunity to introduce changes, which should include the establishment of an anti-corruption agency.

Ms Shortall says irrespective of who wins the vote for Taoiseach, the Dáil needs to change.
