Pearl Mackie has been named as the new Doctor Who companion alongside Peter Capaldi's Time Lord in the Tardis.

The announcement was made on BBC One today during the half-time break of the FA Cup semi-final between Everton and Manchester United.

Mackie comes in to replace Jenna Coleman as the Doctor's assistant after Coleman's character Clara Oswald, departed the show last year.

The long existing science fiction show continues filming this year and the episodes will be aired in 2017.

The 28-year-old previously played a character in the medical drama Doctors in 2014 and is currently performing in a West End production.

Responding to the news of her new role, Mackie, who will play Bill said:

"I'm incredibly excited to be joining the Doctor Who family. It's such an extraordinary British institution, I couldn't be prouder to call the Tardis my home. Peter Capaldi is such a brilliant actor, and his Doctor is such a wacky and wonderful character, I can’t wait to see what adventures are in store for him and Bill throughout time and space."

Doctor Who is now heading for its 10th season after being reintroduced to schedules in 2005.
