It's almost a year since Irish law banned the slapping of kids under the defence of 'reasonable chastisement'.

Back then, George remembered having one his minor disagreements with Barnardos CEO Fergus Finlay over the issue; so Fergus came back, one year on, to tell him whether it's had a positive impact.

'We're no further on, in one way.  It was always illegal to beat your kids, you just haven't been able to use a certain defence for the past year.'

George wasn't impressed with Fergus' use of the word 'beat' as it is naturally emotive, but Fergus insisted that that is what often happens.  It's often not just a slap, but a smack with enough force to really hurt a child.

Fergus also made the point that there's been a lot of silence from all quarters of society since the law change.
