Minister of State Simon Harris says that local councillors featured on the RTE investigates programme can't continue in public life.

It comes after one of those councillors, Hugh McElvaney, claimed that he would run for election again in Monaghan and would top the poll.

Speaking to the Sunday Independent McElvaney claimed that he is worth €10 million.

He was secretly filmed asking for £10,000 in exchange for securing planning permission for wind farms in the RTE programme.

According to the paper, the Garda Fraud Squad has been liaising with RTE in connection with lobbying allegations, and may seek footage that was not broadcast on Monday.

Harris says that the councillors involved shouldn't continue in public office.

Yesterday McElvaney and Joe Queenan resigned from the Local Authority Members Association, while Cllr John O'Donnell had his membership terminated after he refused to resign.

The authority says it is 'shattered and saddened' by the revelations about corruption among councillors.
