Justin Timberlake has removed a selfie from his Instagram which showed him casting his vote in the US presidential election.

The singer and actor flew from California to his home town in Memphis, Tennessee to vote early.

Although state authorities have praised his example, taking a photo or video anywhere inside a polling station is illegal under state law.

He urged his followers in a hashtag-filled post to "choose to have a voice", explaining that there are "no excuses".

Officials referenced Timberlake's chart hit as they said they were "thrilled Justin can't stop the feeling", but reminded voters to use their phones inside polling booths only to help them vote.

However, legal officials will not review the incident.

District Attorney Amy Weirich said "no one in our office is currently investigating this matter nor will we be using our limited resources to do so".

Most US states allow voters to participate in early voting, but election day is on 8 November.
