A 39-year-old Irishman has been injured on the first day of bull running festival in the Spanish city of Pamplona.

He was taken to hospital for treatment, but his injuries are not thought to be severe.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it will provide assistance if requested.

Three other men were more seriously gored at the event.

Two men from the US were injured in the chest and scrotum, and one man from Spain was gored in the thigh.

The week-long festival usually attracts 2,000 runners, with the last fatality occurring in 2009.

Earlier this week, an Irish woman wearing fake bull horns protested the festival.

She wore black underwear with the words "Stop Bullfights" painted on her body.

Grace McKeown from Dundalk joined nearly 100 protesters in the centre of Pamplona on Wednesday.

The protest was organised by PETA and Spanish animal-protection group AnimaNaturalis.

"Torturing and killing animals can never be justified as entertainment," Ms McKeown said.

"We stand united with the vast majority of Spanish people, who don't support bloody bullfighting spectacles."
