Gardaí have renewed their appeal for information after a woman was found unconscious in Carlow on Sunday.

A woman in her 50’s was discovered unconscious and injured on the grounds of Pollerton Castle, Pollerton Road, Carlow early on Sunday afternoon.

The woman was taken to St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny in a serious condition and the scene was preserved for a technical examination.

Lead investigator, Superintendent Gerry Redmond from Carlow Garda Station it is apparent the woman was the victim of a "very, very serious assault."

They are calling for witnesses, particularly anyone who travelled on Staplestown Road, St. Patrick’s Avenue or Pollerton Road - either on foot, bicycle or vehicle - between the hours of 2am and 5am on Sunday morning to make contact.

Any drivers that may have travelled the roads during the same time period and may have dash cam footage are also asked to come forward.

Gardaí have thanked the public for their assistance in finding a couple who were walking in the area and have since been identified.
