Citizens' Assembly vote to give explicit power to the Oireachtas

The Citizen's Assembly has voted to replace the 8th amendment with a provision giving explicit power to the Oireachtas to legislate for abortion, the rights of the unborn and the rights of the pregnant woman. 

They voted by a margin of 51 to 38 in the third and final ballot of the day. The final ballot will take place tommorow.

Speaking about today's vote, Justice Laffoy said "Today 57%  of the members of the Citizens’ Assembly voted to replace Article 40.3.3 with a constitutional provision that would grant the Oireachtas the exclusive power to make laws on the termination of pregnancy and any rights of the unborn. 

Dr Ciara Kelly: Maternity Hospital ownership is "a failure to show remorse"

Dr Ciara Kelly has spoken out against the decision to hand sole ownership of the new National Maternity Hospital to the religious group Sisters of Mercy.

Speaking on Alive And Kicking, Dr Kelly said it was not reasonable for the hospital to be owned by the nuns given the group has an outstanding debt of €2 million to the redress scheme.

"It's a failure to show remorse, and it's a failure to show atonement," she said. "This is a bad idea and there's no reason for it.  

Macron wins first round of French presidential election

According to initial projections, Emmanuel Macron has won the first round of the French presidential election. 

Far-right Front National leader Marine Le Pen is in second, according to the polling company IPSOS. The official result is not expected until later on Sunday night.

The top two candidates go through to a second round head-to-head contest on the 7th of May. Eleven people are standing in the contest to replace Francois Hollande. 

IMO says "fake news" causing drop in vaccination rates

The Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) has said that "fake news" is causing a drop in vaccination rates. 

The new president of the IMO, Dr Ann Hogan says the fall in HPV immunisation among young girls is partly due to social media campaigns that make false claims about risks from vaccinations.

Addressing the IMO's AGM in Galway, she said this was putting young women at risk of cervical cancer and other illnesses.

Howlin criticises "do-nothing Government" at Labour party conference

Labour leader Brendan Howlin said that the Irish people are being let down by a "do-nothing Government", at the Labour Party National Conference. 

Speaking at the conference he said "Brexit happened. Trump happened. Tomorrow, the French people go to the polls, against the backdrop of yet another horrific terrorist attack. And Le Pen might yet happen.

"People are voting, in large part, out of fear and out of hurt. There are many people, too many, happy to prey on these fears.
