The FBI has said it is gathering information into an alleged incident on an aircraft carrying Brad Pitt and his children.

The agency is evaluating whether to open its own investigation into allegations regarding an incident involving one of his children.

"The FBI is continuing to gather facts and will evaluate whether an investigation at the federal level will be pursued," a spokesperson said.

Several media outlets, using anonymous sources, have reported that the actor is now under investigation by a child welfare agency.

The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Families refused to say whether it was investigating Pitt, whose representatives have not responded to the claims.

A spokesperson for the LAPD told Newstalk.com yesterday that it was "not currently handling any report or allegation into Mr Brad Pitt".

Angelina Jolie Pitt filed for divorce on Monday, saying she came to the decision "for the health of the family".

She has asked for physical custody of the couple's six children.

Jolie, 41, and Pitt, 52, known collectively as Brangelina, married in 2014 after 10 years together.

They first met when they played married spies in the film Mr And Mrs Smith, when Pitt was still married to Friends star Jennifer Aniston.

Jolie had been married twice before, to actors Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton.

Divorce experts say following the split, Jolie and Pitt will have to agree to a parenting plan, or face a public custody battle in court.

Both actors have, in separate statements, said their primary concern was their children and asked for privacy.

French actress Marion Cotillard released a statement yesterday in a bid to end speculation she had anything to do with the couple's break up.

She is starring with Pitt in the new film 'Allied' and some reports this week suggested a relationship between the pair was the reason Jolie filed for divorce.

In the statement, Cotillard revealed she was pregnant with her second child by long-term partner Guillaume Canet, and stressed her commitment to the Frenchman.
