A lightning strike in Paris has left ten children and one adult injured, including at least five seriously, according to local authorities.

The incident happened at Parc Monceau in the city's north-west on Saturday afternoon.

"There are currently 11 injured unfortunately, 10 children and an adult who was accompanying them," local official Vincent Baladi told iTELE television.

Police say a medical unit has been set up on site to treat the victims with "absolutely urgency".

Paris city councillor Karen Taieb says three people have been taken to hospital, but their condition is unknown.
She says the children were at a birthday party when a thunderstorm struck the park.

It's believed the children were aged between seven and 14-years-old.

Commander Eric Moulin said an off-duty fire officer was one of the first people to arrive at the scene.
"Without his help in those initial moments the situation would have been much worse," he said.
