Agreement reached on revised pay scale for new teachers

The teachers union ASTI says it is continuing to pursue a resolution through talks, after their counterparts in the INTO and TUI reached agreement on new pay.

The agreement was reached between the unions and Government officials in relation to a revised pay scale for new teachers.

This agreement will see increases of up to €2,000 per year for new teachers at the start of their careers.

It is estimated that over a teacher’s career, the value of these increases will be €135,000.

This deal for new teachers follows on from the recent increase of €796 per year for every teacher covered by the Lansdowne Road Agreement, in respect of substitution and supervision payments.

A further €796 for substitution and supervision will be added to the pay scales for teachers covered by the agreement next September.

The new pay deal will not be applied to ASTI members, as they did not sign up to the Lansdowne Road Agreement.

The ASTI confirmed it had received no offer on the restoration of new teachers’ pay.

ASTI President Ed Byrne said: "We will continue to pursue a resolution through talks. We want equal pay for equal work.

"However, we reiterate that ASTI members have rejected the Lansdowne Road Agreement for a number of reasons, including its failure to deliver pay equalisation for new teachers."

The second-level teachers’ union will begin balloting its members on industrial action later this month.

Fianna Fáil spokesperson on education, Thomas Byrne, said: "Thankfully this deal will significantly reduce pay inequality for new teachers.

"I would hope that the ASTI would see some possibility of taking part in the Lansdowne Road process and that their members may rightly benefit from the deal."

Speaking at the announcement, Education Minister Richard Bruton said: "Today's announcement is great news for new teachers. This agreement shows what is possible through dialogue and negotiation within the Lansdowne Road Agreement."

The revised arrangement will be implemented in two phases on January 1st 2017 and January 1st 2018. 

Commenting on the agreement, INTO president Rosena Jordan said: "Pay inequality is eroding morale and creating discontent.

"This is a very significant agreement that settles another aspect of unequal pay scales".
