Bolingbrook Police Department says Steven Alexander was an "exemplary officer"
It is understood one of the victims of last night’s crash in Co Wexford was an American police officer.
Steven Alexander, his brother Doug Jnr and his parents Doug and Lily were all killed in the collision with a truck at Begerin Hill - about four kilometres east of New Ross - last night.
They had travelled from Illinois to Ireland for a family funeral.
A statement from Bolingbrook Police Department in Illinois said father-of-two Steven (49) had served with the force for 17 years.
Bolingbrook Police Director Ken Teppel said: “Steve was an exemplary officer who took great pride in his law enforcement career and who devoted himself to protecting and serving the citizens of Bolingbrook.
"Steve will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him and we will forever keep the Alexander family in our thoughts and our prayers.”
The road where the crash happened was closed all day as forensic officers carried out an investigation but it has since reopened.
Local Councillor John Flemming knows the Alexanders' extended family, and says the whole area is in shock following the tragic crash last night.
