Thousands of ESB customers were left without power tonight following a blaze in South Dublin which emergency services are still dealing with.

Dublin Fire Brigade say 6 units are battling the fire at a 220 voltage substation on Jamestown Rd in Inchicore after a transformer caught fire.

Some 15,000 homes and businesses in the west of the city were without power supply for under an hour after the fire broke out.

ESB crews have been dispatched and the area has been made safe.

The Garda Press Office has since issued the following statement with regards to safety procedures for those living close to the affected area.

"An Garda Síochána on behalf of Dublin Fire Brigade wish to advise residents close to the on going fire at an ESB sub-station on Kylemore Way, Bluebell, Dublin to remain indoors and keep windows/doors shut. Members of the public are advised to avoid the fumes emanating from this fire."
