A group campaigning for a Yes vote in the same-sex marriage referendum has hailed an upsurge in voter registration.

Yes Equality says the fact that over 65,000 people have joined the supplementary electoral register in advance of the May 22nd referendum is 'phenomenal'.

Over the course of the register being open, this figure equates to some 2,000 new voters joining the register every day.

The total figures, supplied by the Department of the Environment, show that in Dublin City and County alone, almost 27,000 new voters joined the supplementary register in advance of the deadline earlier this month.

In Galway City, just over 3,100 voters were added, while in Kildare County 4,500 new electors were added to the rolls.

This means an extra 2% have registered to vote since February 15th and before the May 5th deadline.

However, from this, we have to take into account that voters can be on the register to vote in local elections (from any country), European elections (from elsewhere in the EU) or Dáil elections (if you are from Ireland and the UK).

This surge of new voters comes on foot of a concerted #useyourvote effort, to ensure that the voices of as many citizens as possible are heard in the referendums next Friday.

These latest figures follow the addition of 40,000 new voters to the electoral register following a youth and student-focused voter registration drive in November last year.

Speaking today, Yes Equality spokesperson Brian Sheehan said: "We are delighted to see this phenomenal groundswell of democratic engagement in this referendum. The past few months has seen over 100,000 people - primarily young people, students, and first time voters - making the effort to ensure that their voices are heard on 22 May".

The total number of people eligible to vote up to February was 3,146,777 - but an extra 65,911 people have been added to the supplementary register ahead of the referendums this Friday.
