It's over a year away, but we are already fascinated by the way the US Presidential election is shaping up.

One of the most interesting aspects of the race is turning out to be the outlying candidates putting themselves forward for consideration.

Political choice in the States is notoriously limited because of its two party system.

Within that, the choices facing Democrats and Republicans at their selection conventions are becoming increasingly more complex.

Rumours continue to circulate that current Vice President Joe Biden could go up against Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination, and Donald Trump has only reluctantly stepped back from his hint that he might run as an independent if Republican party members do not choose him for the nomination.

But the rabble that is gathering on the fringes of their campaigns, the lesser known radicals who represent America's weird and wonderful points of view, are also worth a look. This election's crop of independents and minority party representatives could not be any more diverse.

They range from a transhumanist who believes in enhancing humans to someone who wants to bring back prohibition.

Newstalk.com took a look at some of America's edgier candidates.

The transhumanist

Zoltan Istvan is a futurist and writer from California, who is running for the transhumanist.

His movement that wants to transform the human condition by developing technologies that enhance our biological capabilities.

He has made that all sound quite normal in his campaign mission statement 'A transhumanist aiming to put science, health, & technology at the forefront of American politics'.

Istvan says he is hoping to ride his immortality bus all the way to The White House.

The fugitive software millionaire

John McAfee (70), developer of the McAfee antivirus software you probably have on your PC, has announced his candidacy.

The entrepreneur is probably best known for going on the run in 2012 following the murder of his neighbour in Belize.

McAfee, who describes himself as an 'eccentric millionaire', is so convinced he will win the election that he has apologised to Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in advance if they feel that he does not represent them.

The prohibitionists

The temperance movement is not dead at all.

Though prohibition in the US ended in 1933 The Prohibition Party supports its re-introduction and is considering two candidates for next year's race.

James Hedges and Jack Fellure both represent the party's manifest beliefs that alcohol, tobacco and gambling should all be banned.

The party earned only 519 votes in the 2012 presidential election, but did have considerable clout in its day.

The birther theorist

Birther theorist Andy Martin has previously attempt to run for the Republican and Democratic parties, and as an Independent. In 2016 he is running for the Republicans.

Martin is a trained lawyer who is a serial filer of law suits, earning him a name as a 'vexacious litigant'.

He has previously sued the State of Hawaii in an attempt to force the release of Barack Obama's long form birth certificate, on the basis that if he was in fact born in Africa he would not legitimately be allowed to hold the office of US President.

The comedienne

TV comedienne Roseanne Barr will run for a second time for The Peace and Freedom Party.

Best known for her working class sit-com Roseanne, the Hawaiian entertainer wants to fight for healthcare, workplace and LGBT rights.

The Peace and Freedom Party wants to be an official third party on the American political spectrum, an organised group representing left-wing views.

The former stripper

Vietnam War veteran James 'Jimmy' McMillan III is a former stripper and private investigator from New York.

He is the founder of the Rent is Too Damn High party and previously tried to run for Mayor of New York.

McMillan claims reducing rent could "create 3 to 6 million jobs" by freeing up capital to give businesses a chance to hire people.

The White Supremacist

No surprise that among this diverse group of would-be politicians is a white supremacist.

Bob Whitaker, a political activist from South Carolina, wants to represent the American Freedom Party in the 2016 race.

He proudly boasts that he is a former Reagan Administration appointee, and has written strategy documents for the fight against 'White Genocide'.

The others

Among the others who want to run, a pastor from Florida (Terry Jones), a musician from Texas (Guy Schwartz) and performance artist from Massachusetts (Vermin Suprem), an internet personality (Dan Bilzerian) and two personalities who cannot be consider because they are under 35.

Waka Flocka Flame, a rapper from Georgia and 15-year-old Deez Nuts, from Iowa - who had acutally been polling well.

The Green Party, the Veterans Party of America, the Constitution Party, the Libertarian Party, and the Party for Socialism and Liberation all say they want to run candidates too.
