Members of the Teachers' Union of Ireland are being backed by students in strike action over pay and security for young workers.
Secondary school teachers will hold a day of strike action before the general election.
Members of the TUI voted 89% in favour of industrial action over issues of pay and security of employment for young teachers.
They say the stoppage will go ahead unless their demand for meaningful talks is met.
The union says the poor pay and employment security for young teachers is forcing many of them into income poverty.
That's something Deputy President of the Union of Students in Ireland Annie Hoey says students can understand.
"They may have families who may be affected by working conditions... I think there's a level of understanding about why they need to do this," she added.
