The Taoiseach has added his voice to calls for an overhaul of the laws allowing the Garda Ombudsman to monitor the phones of journalists.
He said that while there might be good reason to monitor phones in cases involving national security, surveillance is not warranted in cases where journalists are dealing with sources.
Frances Fitzgerald is due to update the cabinet tomorrow on the surveillance of journalists' phones and the potential ways to stop it.

Meanwhile, a Sinn Féin TD says there's no reason why any law should allow surveillance of a journalist's phone.
Peadar Toibin was responding to calls for a legal review, stripping GSOC of the right to monitor civilian phones.
Ministers will be briefed tomorrow on the laws that allow such surveillance and examine possible ways to rescind them.
Ahead of their meeting, Toibin says the relationship of journalists and sources should always be protected:
