Staff at Dublin Bus are to vote on industrial action over the coming two weeks in a row over pay and working conditions.

Workers at the state-owned company will be balloted after rejecting an 8.25% pay rise recommended by the Labour Court.

The two unions representing staff had sought increases of up to 31% to bring them in line with wage terms secured by Luas drivers earlier this year.

The NBRU will hold its ballot on Thursday and Friday, while SIPTU members in the traffic grade, which includes drivers, will be balloted next week.

The general secretary of the NBRU, Dermot O’Leary, said industrial action could take the form of an all-out strike, work stoppages or a “no fares” day.

"It is clear that a mandate for industrial action will be received from Dublin Bus staff over the coming days, given the level of anger reflected in the outright rejection of the Labour Court pay proposals,” he said.

SIPTU organiser John Murphy said workers have not had a pay increase since 2008, despite agreeing to several productivity and cost-cutting measures.

“The agreement of the workers to introduce such measures was crucial to the stabilisation of financial situation and the company’s return to profitability,” he said.

“The Labour Court recommendation did not in any way recognise or attempt to redress the sacrifices made by the workers during this period.”
