Six in 10 people living in Ireland are overweight.

That is one of the findings of the latest 'Health of the Nation' report, which does bring some good news on Ireland's battle with obesity.

This is the first time researchers have looked at the 'Health of the Nation' since 2007.

Despite the figures, eight out of 10 Irish people claim to be in good health.

Overall four in five of us say we're in good health, but some of our bad habits are also coming under the spotlight.

Only one in three is getting enough exercise, and snacking is also a vice the majority of us admit to indulging in every day.

On the positive side, more adults are now ex smokers than smokers and most people eat fruit and vegetables each day.

With the health minister set to propose a 20% tax on fizzy drinks be included in next week's budget, there's more good news in the research which shows that overall, our obesity rates are levelling off, and may even be falling slightly.

GP Doctor Sinead Beirne told Newstalk.com's Breakfast show she is not surprised by the findings.
