A Sinn Féin TD has revealed that the party has procedures in place since the early 90s in relation to child protection.

Speaking to Lunchtime, Environment Spokesperson and TD for Laois-Offaly Brian Stanley defended Sinn Féin’s credibility on the issue of child abuse, following Mairia Cahill’s allegations of a sexual abuse cover-up: "We have robust policies and procedures in place for about 20 years now and we have updated them recently."

Earlier this year, Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams had to defend himself against allegations that he did not do enough to bring his brother Liam Adams to justice. [Liam] Adams was jailed for 16 years after being convicted of 10 counts of rape and gross indecency against his daughter.

When asked by presenter Jonathan Healy was it not the case that Gerry Adams knew his brother was working with young people in Dundalk but didn't come forward with information, Deputy Stanley replied: "We put those policies in place. I certainly would take them very seriously."

Jonathan then asked Deputy Stanley when the policies were introduced, to which he replied: "My recollection is that as far back as the 90s we have had procedures in place."

Jonathan then questioned whether Gerry Adams followed Sinn Féin policy. Deputy Stanley replied: "I think Gerry Adams would follow Sinn Féin policy."

"That matter has been before the courts. Gerry Adams went to the courts and testified against his brother and gave evidence against his brother in court."

"He dealt with it very forthrightly. I've seen Gerry Adams dealing with issues like this internally and externally. He's always very upfront."

Deputy Stanley finished by stating: "If I had any information, whether 20 years ago or be it today, I would be ringing up my local Garda station or would be diverting people to the local Garda station."
