Seventeen passengers and crew have been injured after a Hong Kong Airlines flight hit severe turbulence.

It was carrying 216 people from Bali to Hong Kong when it ran into difficulties above Borneo.

The jet turned back and landed safely.

Ambulances were sent to the tarmac in assisting the evacuation of the plane. Most of the casualties suffered were minor head injuries, with no serious injuries reported.

Three crew members and eight passengers were taken to hospital while six others were treated at the airport clinic.

It is the second incident involving Airbus planes over Indonesian territory in the past four days.

On Wednesday, an Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi encountered sudden heavy turbulence as it prepared to land in the Indonesian capital, injuring 31 passengers and a member of the crew.
