Israeli officials have arrested several suspects in raids linked to the deadly firebombing of a Palestinian home and placed two more alleged Jewish extremists in a controversial form of detention without trial.

The arrests came as calls increase for a crackdown on Jewish extremism in the wake of last week's arson attack in the West Bank that killed an 18-month-old child and his father.

Toddler Ali Dawabsheh was killed during the blaze on August 31, while father Saad Dawabsheh died in hospital on Saturday from his injuries.

Israel's prime minister Binjamin Netanyahu described the act as terrorism.

On Monday the country's security cabinet approved the detention without trial of Jewish terror suspects, which was previously only legal when applied to Palestinians.
