A paediatrician has told the trial of a childminder accused of shaking a 10-month-old baby girl that it is not credible to conclude the infant's injuries were accidental.
Sandra Higgins (34) of The Beeches, Drumgola Wood in Cavan denies causing serious harm to the infant at her home on March 28th, 2012.
Dr Alan Finan treated the baby girl after she was brought by Ms Higgins to the emergency department of Cavan General Hospital at around 4:30pm.
The consultant paediatrician has told the childminder's trial the infant suffered seizures for five days, had bleeding on the brain, retinal detachment and bruising to her face and body.
Dr Finan's view is that the baby girl's injuries were not accidental - and that what appeared to be fingertip bruising on her back suggested she had been shaken.
Eye specialist Professor Michael O'Keeffe gave evidence of extensive haemorrhaging behind the baby's retinas which he found suspicious of a shaken baby.
Ms Higgins denies assaulting the baby.
