Search teams have recovered the Coast Guard Rescue 116 flight data recorder from the sea off the coast of County Mayo.

A government spokesperson said the downed helicopter's "black box" recorder is currently in the custody of the Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) and will go to the UK for examination tomorrow.

The device - which is comprised of two recorders in one - is reportedly in good condition with no apparent external damage.

Jurgen Whyte, the AAIU chief inspector of Air Accidents said the recorder was recovered "at 16:30 hours today from the seabed just off Blackrock.”

“The recorder is now in the possession of one of my investigators and during the night, after some work, we will recover the recorder back to Dublin where it will be onward flown to the UK Air Accident Investigation branch where it will be prepared for download,” he said.

The recorder will be dried out on the ILV Granuaile navigation vessel before being transported to Dublin.

Crews have been searching for the wreckage of the coast guard helicopter since it went down last week.

Earlier the AAIU confirmed the wreckage was found on the sea bed on the eastern side of Black Rock, at a depth of approximately 40 metres.

It is thought the bodies of three missing crew members could still be on-board.
