Today marks the first ever Proclamation Day, where schools and colleges around the country are raising the Tricolour and reading out the Proclamation.

The Proclamation of the Republic, also known as the 1916 Proclamation or Easter Proclamation, was a document issued by the Irish Volunteers and Irish Citizen Army during the Easter Rising.

It states: "We declare the right of the people of Ireland to the ownership of Ireland, and to the unfettered control of Irish destinies, to be sovereign and indefeasible".

"The Irish Republic is entitled to, and hereby claims, the allegiance of every Irishman and Irishwoman".

"The Republic guarantees religious and civil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities to all its citizens, and declares its resolve to pursue the happiness and prosperity of the whole nation and of all its parts, cherishing all the children of the nation equally and oblivious of the differences carefully fostered by an alien government, which have divided a minority from the majority in the past".

It was also signed on behalf of the Provisional Government by Thomas J Clarke, Sean Mac Diarmada, Thomas MacDonagh, Pádraig Pearse, Eamonn Ceannt, James Connolly and Joseph Plunkett.

The Proclamation itself has also been republished in several languages - including Polish and Chinese.

But like the Diaspora, this goes far beyond our borders.

Trinity College Dublin have put together a video, showing its students reading the Proclamation at various locations around the globe.
