A violent prisoner has been sentenced for punching the Governor of Cloverhill Prison but won't actually serve any extra jail time.

Brendan Cummins of Lios Dubh, Armagh Road in Dundalk, Co Louth is already serving a sentence for a series of assaults.

On February 20th last in the yard of Cloverhill Prison’s D-Wing, Brendan Cummins punched Governor Ronan Maher three times in the face.

Today, Governor Maher told Judge Kathryn Hutton that it’s part of the job and goes with the territory but he said he still suffers from neck pain.

Cummins has been on 23 hour lock-up since the assault and the court heard he has also lost certain privileges like having visitors and taking phone calls.

His solicitor Yvonne Bambury said the solitary confinement has been very difficult on her client.

Judge Hutton heard he has ten previous convictions for assault and is serving a four month sentence at the moment.

The 21-year-old was handed a three month sentence for punching Governor Maher, with the final two months suspended.

He will not actually spend any extra time in prison because he wasn’t due for release on other separate charges until the end of September.
