A play based on the story of drug mules Michaella McCollum and Melissa Reid opens in Edinburgh today.

While 'Mule' is based on fictional characters, their stories closely mirror those of McCollum and Reid.

The two women were convicted of trying to smuggle cocaine with a street value of almost €2m from Peru to Spain three years ago.

McCollum returned to Ireland just yesterday, after being released from jail in Peru in April.

She was released after a successful application for parole.

The work opens at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival today, and will also run from the 18th until the 29th of this month.

On the Fringe website, the plot of the play is described: "Naive and threatened or calculated and planned? How does the seemingly innocent adventure of a summer spent in the party capital of the world spiral out of control and end locked up in a notoriously hard core South American prison?

"Inspired by the real events of the Peru Two, Mule explores the murky, hedonistic world of drug smuggling and its apparent female-isation."

It is written and directed by Kat Woods, who told Newstalk Breakfast about why she wrote the play:
