Supermarket giant Tesco is planning to remove added-sugar drinks from its shelves in a bid to tackle childhood obesity.

In a statement, the retailer says: "We have an ongoing sugar and salt reduction programme in place that aims to reduce the added sugar and salt in our own label foods, particularly in our kid's category drinks".

It adds that they are working with suppliers to introduce a larger range of branded low sugar and no-added sugar drinks.

"We can confirm that we will continue to sell no-added sugar versions of branded kid's category drinks including Ribena and Capri Sun in place of the full sugar versions."

It is believed the changes will start from the beginning of September, to coincide with children returning to school.

However it adds that this is not a ban on the sale of juice drinks with added sugar, but rather a scheme to replace those which contain added sugar with no-added sugar versions.
