Northern Ireland's First Minister Peter Robinson has confirmed he is standing down from the position, and as DUP leader.

Mr Robinson told the DUP conference he was bowing out in the knowledge that the northern Ireland is "on safe ground."

The 66-year-old has held the position of First Minister since 2008. In his speech, Mr Robinson made reference to his "advancing years and failing health" - he suffered a heart attack in May and was admitted to hospital.

It is expected either Nigel Dodds or Arlene Foster will take over as leader.

Peter Robinson said it was time for the next generation to take over leadership of the party.

"I want to take this opportunity to thank Iris and my whole family who have carried with me the exigencies of my political roles," he said.

"They have always sacrificed to give me the space to perform my public duties. I trust the Lord will give me strength and time to make up for the price they each have had to pay."

He also expressed his gratitude to his party colleagues and the people of East Belfast, whom he has represented for over 40 years, calling them "special and wonderful people."

Mr Robinson, a practicing Pentecostal, thanked God for placing "in my heart a love for my country, its traditions and way of life - and a passion to defend them."

"Above all," he added, "I thank the people of Northern Ireland for the privilege of serving them and for the prayers that raised my spirits and placed a shield around me."
