A woman whose ex-boyfriend was given a suspended sentence for raping her in her sleep says she does not feel justice was done.

Norwegian national Magnuse Meyer-Hustveit (25) got a seven year suspended term yesterday after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

The court heard the he had e-mailed the victim and admitted to sexually assaulting her on a regular basis.

Hustveit admitted that he had regularly raped and sexually assaulted her in her sleep, often while she was under the influence of medication.

In the e-mail he admitted that he had raped her, saying "I guess it must be under ten times".

He also explained his behaviour, saying "it is really difficult. I did it for short term gratification. I convinced myself it was a victimless crime because you were asleep".

"Now I've written this, you can have me prosecuted. I hope you won't," he said.

Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy said it was a very exceptional case. He said he had to consider the fact that there would be no rational case but for the confessions of the accused.

“In truth this case comes here today out of his own mouth,” he said, before suspending the sentence.

Hustveit's victim, Niamh Nic Dhomhnaill, has warned that such a sentence sends a clear message that rape is not being taken seriously enough.

Asked if she felt justice was done, she told Newstalk Breakfast: "No, I don't think anyone could".

"I think it's only fair that when you do wrong you bear consequences of some sort, and from what I understand this has had no impact on his life".

"He's been able to be in a seemingly very committed relationship...he apparently has been in steady employment the whole time".

"I haven't been able to work for quite some time".

"I've been physically unwell, mentally drained so it's hard to think that there's any justice in that".

"It seems his life has just continued - this was like a minor blip", she added.
