Five people have been arrested in connection with the latest migrants tragedy in the Mediterranean.

Italian police have detained three Libyans and two Algerians in Palermo, Sicily on suspicion of multiple homicide and human trafficking.

The Irish naval vessel LE Niamh brought around 360 migrants ashore in Palermo yesterday after the tragedy on Wednesday.

But it is thought around 200 people died when the wooden boat they were in capsized.

It happened when the fishing boat flipped over as the Niamh approached - probably because desperate passengers surged to one side as they spotted the ship.

Other rescue ships from charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) and the Italian Coast Guard also went to the scene.

The migrants, mostly thought to be Syrians fleeing the country's civil war, arrived in Italy last night.

Meanwhile, President Michael D Higgins has described the European response to the migrant crisis as "shamful".

More than 400 Amnesty International delegates from across the world travelled to Dublin for the International Council Meeting in Citywest.

President Higgins says several countries are being forced to tackle the issue on their own.

Director of Amnesty Ireland, Colm O'Gorman, also echoed President Higgins' comments.
