A woman with Down Syndrome says she is too scared to go out on her own since she was lured back to a Dublin flat and raped in June 2013.

Faisal Ellahi, a Pakistani man who moved to Ireland over 10 years ago, was convicted following a five-week trial that finished up just before Christmas.

The woman's mother paused while reading her victim impact statement to ask if her daughter was OK.

The victim was not in court today but watched on through a live video link.

She smiled when her mother began to speak, but became upset as she described how the rape has affected her and her family.

She said she will never forget the day her "beautiful, innocent, and care free" daughter encountered "utter depravity".

That day was June 12th 2013, and the two had become separated while out for a jog.

Ellahi stopped her on the street and brought her back to his flat where he claimed they had "consensual sexual contact".

He later denied knowing she had an intellectual disability. His victim's mother said he stole her independence that day.

She said her daughter, who is aged in her 20s, has since retreated into a world of her own and no longer feels safe to go out on her own.

The sentence hearing will continue hearing from Ellahi's barrister next week.
