A French national who caused the death of a mother of one after colliding with a LUAS last year has been fined €4,000 for careless driving.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Quentin Hannezo, 31, had been driving to work on April 7 2014 when he broke a red traffic light in Dublin City Centre and collided with an oncoming Luas tram, before skidding on the footpath where Yao Webster had been walking.

The silver BMW car hit Yao Webster, who had been walking on the footpath, killing her immediately.

Mr Hannezzo with a previous address at Ha'penny Bridge House, Lower Ormond Quay, pleaded guilty to careless driving on Jervis Street.

In a victim impact statement, Ms Webser's husband described how his "happiness for the future has been replaced with depression, anxiety and fear."

Robin Webster said he would never understand how his partner of ten years could be taken from him and their daughter while doing such a mundane thing as walking through the city centre.

Garda forensics officers concluded from CCTV that there was nothing Hannezo, who had been driving between 37 and 41 kmph in a 30 zone, could have done to alter the speed and course of the car after hitting the LUAS.

Judge Martin Nolan described the case as tragic and noted that Hannezo had been driving at a normal speed and missed a red light.

It was a 'human failing' he added and there was no doubt Hannezo would live with this for the rest of his life.

He imposed a €4,000 fine.
