A 33-year-old man, named as Michael McGibbon, has died following a shooting in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast.

Police say McGibbon, a taxi driver, was shot three times in the leg in an alleyway at Butler Place close to Elmfield Street just after 10:00pm on Friday night.

Police said Mr McGibbon was not known to them and they didn't know why he had been murdered, and added that the killing bore all the hallmarks of a paramilitary murder.

He was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital where he later died from his injuries. A senior PSNI officer said that the killing 'bears all the hallmarks of a paramilitary murder.'

"Those who carried it out have no legitimacy in this community and today I am asking the community to help us find them. Help us bring justice to the McGibbon family."

There has been widespread condemnation of the killing, with the PSNI describing the shooting as a "heinous crime", and are appealing for witnesses. McGibbon, who had no previous criminal record and no apparent criminal links, had been threatened 24 hours before he was shot.

Local MLA Nelson McCausland of the DUP says he's shocked by news of the killing, stating that "down through the years, the north of the city has suffered so much in terms of death, and pain and heartache".

Local Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly has condemned the killing, saying an armed gang was clearly at war with the local community, and that "clearly they set out to kill this young man, and now there's a family devastated".
