Gardaí appeal for witnesses to fatal Cork assault

Gardaí in Fermoy are appealing for witnesses following a fatal assault which occurred late on Tuesday night at a truck parking area of a garage in Fermoy.

The body of a 40-year-old, believed to be a Polish national, was found at the garage on the Dublin Road at around 10.30pm yesterday.

It is understood he died after being attacked with a baseball bat.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The body of the deceased has been removed from the scene to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem was due to take place on Wednesday evening.

A second man, aged in his late 30s, was injured during the incident and was taken to Cork University Hospital.

His injuries are described as non-life threatening.

The two arrested men are aged in their early 40s and late 20s.

They were arrested at the scene and are currently detained at Fermoy and Mallow garda stations under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, in particular any persons who were in the vicinity of Pyke Road/Dublin Road between the hours of 8.30p.m. and 10.30p.m. last night, Tuesday 21st February, 2017 to contact the incident room at Fermoy Garda Station on 025 - 82100, the Garda Confidential Line 1 800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
