A 26-year-old man was killed in a crash in county Galway in the early hours of this morning.

The single vehicle collision occurred at around 2:45am on the N65 Loughrea to Killimor Rd at Coolagh when the car collided with a concrete barrier.

The driver of the car was seriously injured in the crash and taken to University College Hospital Galway and was later pronounced dead.

Nobody else was involved in the incident.

The road was closed for a time to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators but it has since reopened.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, in particular anyone who was on that stretch of road between 2.30am and 2.45am, to contact Balinasloe Garda Station on 090 9631890.
