The main street of a town in Leitrim is to be renamed after one of the leaders of the Easter Rising.
The town of Manorhamilton has been granted permission to rename its main street after local hero and Irish revolutionary, Seán Mac Diarmada.
Mac Diarmada was from North Leitrim and was heavily influenced by the evictions he watched in Leitrim as a young boy.
Independent Councillor Feilim Gurn says despite his humble beginnings Sean MacDiarmada went on direct events from the GPO during the Easter rising.
"Sean Mac Diarmada grew up in Kiltyclougher. He had a disability, people don't realise that what he used to do was cycle or walk to school. What really got him in to the idea of the Rising was that he had seen local people lose their farms and their houses and they would have been evicted by the English. And this really led him into getting into Sinn Féin and into politics."
The GAA pitch in Carrick-On-Shannon is also named after Seán Mac Diarmada.
