Two car bombs claimed by Islamic State have killed at least 32 people and wounded 75 others in the centre of the southern Iraqi city of Samawa.

The first blast was near a local government building and the second one about 60m away at a bus station, police sources said.

Isis territory extends mostly across Sunni areas of in Iraq's north and west, far from the mainly Shia south, where Samawa is located.

A carbomb just east of Baghdad on Saturday, meanwhile killed at least 24 people and around 38 wounded at busy livestock market in Nahrawan.

It targeted Shia Muslims walking to the northern Baghdad shrine of Imam Musa Kadhim. Isis considers Shia Muslims heretics. 

The rise of the Isis, an ultra-hardline Sunni Islamic group, has worsened Iraq's sectarian civil war between Shias and Sunnis, which began in the vaccum following the 2003 US-led invasion and the overthrow of Saddam Hussein.

 

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has ordered the arrest of demonstrators who stormed Parliament this weekend.

Supporters of hardline Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr were protesting at the failure of the Abadi to approve a new cabinet as part of measures to combat corruption and ease sectarian tensions.

Thousands of demonstrators remain inside Baghdad’s Green Zone after breaking through the perimeter.

It follows weeks of political turmoil and parliamentary paralysis.
