A new song on Ireland's iTunes charts has an unlikely star - 90-year-old grandmother Mary Keane.
Ms Keane's grandson Daithí Ó Drónaí (best known just as Daithí) composed the song 'Mary Keane's Introduction' from a conversation about her youth spent in the West of Ireland.
The spoken word monologue is combined with an ambient intro which leads into a very dance-able chorus.
It's unlikely you'll hear any other tracks with lines like this:
"When we were in our young days we had several boyfriends and you know you’d have them going to dances and there would be no more about it."
Or this:
"My father would come, and my uncle would come and he’d say ‘Mary there’s a fella over that has a big farm of land. You’ll have to go over and meet him."
Daithí's music is a distinctive synthesis of traditional fiddle and contemporary electronic. He has become a mainstay of the Irish festival circuit in recent years, and has opened for international acts such as The XX, DJ Shadow and Santigold.
The single will feature on Daithí's upcoming album 'Tribes'.
