The Irish Farmers Association says it will be re-doubling efforts to promote farm safety after the first farm death of the year yesterday.

Yesterday, 60-year-old Johnny Ryan was killed in an incident involving a tractor at his farm in Clara in County Kilkenny.

Last year 30 people were killed on farms in Ireland, however despite that, the Health and Safety Authority is cutting back on farm safety inspections in 2015.

Chief Executive of Agri-aware Dr Vanessa Woods has this message for farmers on farm safety:

Martin O’Halloran, CEO of the Health and Safety Authority, spoke to Newstalk Breakfast this morning about the safety policies they are hoping to put in place.

Mr O'Halloran said they hope to facilitate farm walks and talks for neighbouring farmers. As well as that, they hope to work on additional publications to help farmers with risk assessment.
