Ireland is ready for any terror strike which may come our way.

That is according to the Representative Association of Commissioned Officers (RACO), which represents the interests of commissioned officers in the Defence Forces.

Commandant Earnán Naughton is the general-secretary of RACO.

"If your question that you're putting to me is 'are we in a ready state', of course we are" he told Newstalk.com.

Commandant Naughton also says he has no reason to question the threat analysis to Ireland, suggesting an attack here is on the lower end of the scale.

It follows comments from the Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan in Brussels, who said while Ireland had no exemption from terrorist entities the threat here is "very low".

Commandant Naughton denied that Ireland is seen as a 'soft touch' target, when compared with larger neighbouring countries.

"Certainly from our own organisation's perspectives and representing our members I would certainly not believe so" he said.

"We have a very robust and fit-for-purpose Defence Forces that we can conduct peace support operations internationally at the highest level - so we are very adequately prepared to apply any sort of response when and where required if called upon".

Commandant Naughton also said that comments attributed to him by a media organisation yesterday - where he expressed concerns over vacancies across the Defence Forces - were long-term sustainability questions.

Commandant Naughton spoke to Newstalk's Jack Quann.
